Pi Cloth Experimentation

It was time for a circular cloth knit in the round.

This is a great way to practice the Lighter Circular Beginning (second half of that video) Or if you don't like youtube here it is in still pictures: last entry here

This is also a great way to get your mind wrapped around a knit on border. It is easier to knit a knit on border than it is to figure out how to knit a knit on border. In other words once you have the start of it figured out the rest is a snap to knit.


For the doubling rounds I used the knit in the front and back of each stitch so I wouldn’t have the YO holes. The pattern on the main part of the cloth was not from a stitch dictionary. I drew it in Excel. The knit on border is from a stitch dictionary.









Unblocked (smoothed flat) it is about 10” in diameter.










Blocked it measures 10.5 inches.

The yarn is Pisgah Yarn & Dyeing Co., Inc America's Best Article 960, Perle Cotton (Size 5, mercerized). Color: Lime #56.

I used size 2 double pointed bamboo needles (8" long) for the whole thing.

The pattern is still in handwritten notes but I do have plans on writing it up with links and details for the tricky parts.

Twisted Trails

Happy Independence Day!

I finished the cloth I've been knitting. I am offering this pattern for free again. It is a charted pattern I've called Twisted Trails.

The cotton I used is J&P Coats Royale Fashion Crochet Cotton (Size 3). This is the navy blue although the pictures shows it to be a lighter blue.

I knit this on size 3 needles.

I'll be putting this pattern up on Ravelry as a free download and adding it to the sidebar here. But first I have to refresh my member as to how to do that.

Little Twisted Rib Cloth

Finally...the July cloth is done!

The pattern is charted...only 4 rows...although it is a 13 st repeat plus 7.

This is done with DMC's Senso 100% cotton (size 3). I paid $2.75 for 150 yds. I probably have enough left over for a half of a cloth. Or maybe it would be enough for a lace edging for a pillow or towel????

I could see using this rib for the tummy part of a summer top...or the whole thing!

Unfortunately my summer time is already filled. I got volunteered to be the craft person for our VBS. This coming week is the last time I have to be sure all 5 days of crafts are ready to go. We only used 1 of the preplanned crafts. So it was a lot of brainstorming and preparing these past couple of weeks to come up with 4 other appropriate crafts.

We (my dd and myself) are off to a Higher Things youth group gathering at the end of this month. VBS starts 2 days after we get back...yikes!

And then there is Stitches Midwest the day after the final day of VBS....I think I'm going to have to pass this year....sigh.

And our youngest dd is freaking out about me being gone...that just adds the final touch to my already too busy summer.

I did take some time out last night to go to Knit Night. I got some great advice on finishing my cashmere scarf...it's almost done! I also got the ribbing done on my Horcrux socks (for dd #2). It was my traveling project so it took a bit longer than usual. On to that post......

Elfin Lace

You've seen this cloth before (or not). It's about 7 1/2" x 7 1/2", 55 sts, done in Mercerized Cotton. Other options for smaller dishcloth yarn would be the linen I spoke of in the other post I did today or Patons Grace (that's a little bit bigger than the mercerized cotton).

I didn't think I'd be adding so many cloths to this blog. But it is so much fun to chart them up and share them with others.

This charted pattern is a bit on the unconventional side. Hope it makes sense to those wishing to knit it. I've used it quite often...even for a lace cashmere scarf (I'm a little better than half way with that) so I know the pattern works. Y'all may just be a little taken aback with the way the repeat stitches line up...or *not* line up as the case may be! The chart is pretty and colorful...I mean.... it's pretty colorful.

This is the first pattern that I switched to using the knitting fonts available from Aire River. It works really slick and can't wait to do more charting with that font. I'm not entirely used to it yet but it looks *very* promising.

Lean to the Left

This free cloth pattern (pdf) is a finished size of about 8" by 8". Charted pattern here.


It's 61 sts on size 3 needles done with Royale Fashion Size 3 Crochet Thread.


I think this one and *especially* Lean to the Right would make a cute stitch pattern for the bottom of a summer top...say from the belly button down. Lean to the Right has just a bit more ribbing action to it than Lean to the Left.

This free pattern is done in the size 3 crochet cotton like the others.

This one is 55 sts on size 3 needles.

It measures about 7" x 7".

Leafy Vines

Here is another free washcloth pattern I put together.

It's done in the size 3 crochet cotton. This one is 53 sts on size 3 needles.

I'm loving the green grass, warmer temps and the smell of the neighbor's lilacs coming in through the open windows. I wish lilac season was longer.

Here is a pattern for a cloth made with size 3 Mercerized Cotton.

I've been looking through stitch pattern books for patterns I think would make into nice cloths. I hate to say dishcloths because I think these would make nice face cloths as well.

I added the borders to the stitch pattern...and viola! A new dish/face cloth pattern!

It's 58 stitches on size 3 needles. The pattern is charted but is very easy to read. You read the odd rows, right to left. The even rows, left to right.

This cloth looks the same on both sides.

Two more dishcloths

I finished a bunch of projects this summer. I'm hoping to get the pictures up soon...hopefully this weekend.

Here are two more dishcloths.

This first one is Elfin Lace from Barbara Walker's Treasury of Knitting Patterns, Vol 1., p. 208.
I charted the pattern out with the keyboard which worked really great. I used size 3 needles with size 3 Crochet Thread (100% mercerized cotton). I did 5 rows of garter stitch after casting on (55 st.) and a 3 st. garter edge on each side. Then five repeats of the pattern (16 row repeat) plus one more row 1 before doing the 5 rows of garter stitch and binding off.


This next cloth used the Bumblebee Pattern from Barbara Walker's 3rd vol., p. 155. I used Cotton DK Freedom (50% off purchase) in a bumblebee yellow.

CO 56 st. 5 rows of garter stitch. 4 1/2 pattern repeats (12 row pattern) with 3 garter stitch border on sides (end after an odd row is completed). 5 rows of garter stitch. BO.

What would a knitting blog be without a few dishcloths?

I won't bore you with all the dishcloths I've knit but here are a few special ones. The two lacy ones are my first lace knitting.

The bottom right one is done in the regular dishcloth cotton yarn (#6 needles:Inc. to 44 st). I used the Multidirectional Diagonal Scarf pattern doing only the first and last triangle (alternate directions on that last triangle).

The bottom left one is done with Patons Grace 100% Mercerized Cotton (#3 needles:57 st). The Horseshoe Lace Washcloth pattern is from the book Knitter's Stash. Grace is thinner than the regular cotton dishcloth yarn but thicker than the crochet thread that I used for the top two.

The purple one above it is also from Knitter's Stash. The pattern is called Lacy Vine Washcloth(#3 needles:55 st). And yes, there is more than one mistake in the garter edge. When I get purling there is no stopping me sometimes. This one and the top green one are done in Royale Fashion Crochet Thread - size 3 - 100% Mercerized Cotton.

The top green one is the Dragon Scales Washcloth pattern (#3 needles:71 st). Again from Knitter's Stash. Theresa Gaffey supplied 8 linen washcloth patterns for the book and they are all lovely.

I do like using the the cloths knit with the smaller thread when I do dishes (no dishwasher here). They are so nice and thin. It makes the job almost enjoyable! I've actually come to not mind doing dishes thanks to Flylady....it's only a 15 minute job. And although I've fallen off her wagon she still has taught me many lessons that I still apply. Unfortunately knitting beats cleaning. Maybe if I'd make some sort of knitted something to help make the other jobs more enjoyable!

I took the picture upside down to avoid the shadows. Next time I'll just turn the dishcloths around too so I don't get sea sick looking at the picture. Hope y'all can't tell it's upside down. (I shouldn't have said that....done in my best Hagrid voice.)
